nlh.poker Clans: How to Create, Join, and Chat

An nlh.poker clan is a group of up to 50 players. Learn how to create a clan, join by invite or request, use clan chat and Discord, and understand the limits.

An nlh.poker clan is a group of players who join together to practice, share hands, and stay motivated. On nlh.poker, you can create a clan with a tag, name, and description, or join one by invite or request. Members get a members-only real-time chat.

This guide covers how to create a clan, the two ways to join, what the master can manage, how chat and Discord work, and the limits you should know. If you are new to the site, start with the nlh.poker feature guide to see where the Clan menu lives in the Lounge.

What is a clan on nlh.poker?

A clan on nlh.poker is a group of up to 50 players who belong together. On nlh.poker, you create, join, and manage clans from the Clan menu in the Lounge. You need to be logged in to use clans.

Every clan has a few pieces of information. The tag is a short unique code that identifies the clan, and no two clans can share one.

FieldRulesEditable after creation?
TagUppercase letters and digits, 1–5 characters (e.g., ABC12)No
Name1–20 charactersYes, by the master
Description1–200 characters; shown to players searching for clansYes, by the master
DiscordOptional invite link; only members can see itYes, by the master

Each player can belong to only one clan. There are two roles: the master, who runs the clan, and regular members.

What you can do in a clan

Studying poker alone can get lonely. A clan adds a group of people to keep you moving, and it comes with a few practical features.

Members-only chat

Only clan members can read and write in the chat. Share a tricky hand, today's results, or the topic you want to practice next.

Tag next to your name

Your clan tag appears in brackets, like [ABC12], next to your name on profiles and the daily leaderboard. Tap it to open the clan profile.

See members' ranks

The clan profile lists each member's rank and rating, so your teammates' progress becomes a source of motivation.

Private table invites

Hosts of a private table can pick clan members, alongside friends, and invite them all at once.

How to create a clan

You can create a clan while you are not in one. Enter a tag, name, and description, then press Create, and you become the master of a new clan.

  1. Open Clan from the Lounge
  2. Choose the Create tab
  3. Enter the tag (uppercase letters and digits, up to 5), the name, and the description. The Discord invite link is optional
  4. Press Create

You cannot change the tag later, so pick something that will last, such as your team's initials. Tags that look like official staff names, and text containing blocked words, are rejected. A tag that another clan already uses is not available either.

Note: When you create a clan, any invitations you received and any join request you had open are cleared automatically.

How to join a clan: invites and requests

There are two ways in: accept an invitation, or apply to a clan yourself.

Join by invitation

When a master invites you, the invitation shows up under the Inbox tab of the Clan screen. Press Join to become a member right away, or Decline to ignore it.

Masters invite players with the Invite to clan button on a player's profile, or by searching for a player name under Invite inside the clan settings (gear button). Name search needs at least 2 characters.

Join by request

If you already know the clan you want, use the Find a clan tab. Type the start of a clan tag and matching clans appear in the list.

  1. Type the start of the clan tag in the Find a clan tab
  2. Read the description, then press Apply
  3. When the master presses Approve, you become a member

Your pending request appears under Your request in the same tab, where you can Withdraw it. You can only have one request open at a time, so withdraw the current one before applying to another clan.

When a clan already invited you

If you try to apply to a clan that has already invited you, you are told to join from your Inbox instead.

Full clans

A clan with 50 players is marked Full and does not accept requests. Wait until a spot opens up.

What the clan master can do

The master runs the clan. In the member list, the master carries a badge and appears first. Only the master can:

  • Invite players: search by name and send an invitation (pending invitations can be cancelled)
  • Approve or reject requests: handle incoming join requests in the Requests tab of the clan settings
  • Kick members: remove a member from the clan
  • Edit the clan profile: change the name, description, and Discord invite link
  • Dissolve the clan: delete the clan and remove every member

All of these live behind the Clan settings gear button. It shows the number of open requests and received invitations, so a master can see at a glance when something needs attention.

How clan chat works

Once you are in a clan, open the Chat & members tab to use clan chat. Nobody outside the clan can read or write in it, so it is a comfortable place to talk about practice.

  • Messages can be up to 200 characters. Press Enter to send and Shift + Enter for a new line
  • When you open the chat, you see the latest 50 messages, grouped by day
  • Messages are deleted 3 months after they are posted. Older messages do not stay in the chat
  • You can send up to 5 messages every 3 seconds; faster than that and sending is limited
  • Opening the chat in another window closes the earlier connection. If the connection drops, press Reconnect

Get push notifications for new posts

In Settings, turn on Clan chat under notifications to receive a push notification when someone posts. The switch is only available when push notifications are enabled. On iPhone and iPad, add nlh.poker to your Home Screen first and enable push notifications from that app.

For longer conversations or voice chat while you practice, the master can register a Discord invite link for the clan. It is optional, and only joined members can see it.

  1. The master opens Clan settings, then Edit, enters the invite link in the Discord field, and saves
  2. Members press Open Discord at the top of the Clan screen

Links in the form discord.gg/… or discord.com/invite/… work, and so does a bare invite code. Invalid links, or links that cannot be verified, are not saved. Also check on the Discord side that the invite has not been set to expire quickly.

Limits at a glance

Clans have limits to prevent spam and harassment. Remember these three: 50 players per clan, one open request at a time, and a one-week wait to reapply.

ItemLimit or rule
Clans you can belong toOne
Clan size50 players including the master
Join requests you can have openOne at a time

Invitations one player can hold20
Reapplying after a rejection or kickNot for 1 week, for that same clan
ChatUp to 200 characters; up to 5 messages per 3 seconds; deleted after 3 months

Ideas for using your clan

A clan does not become active just because it exists. Pick one goal and write it in the description, and you will attract players with the same pace.

  • Build a hand review group: share confusing hands in the chat and walk through them with the hand review guide. Another player's view often reveals mistakes you would not catch alone
  • Make study a habit: announce a weekly theme such as 3-bet pots, then follow your study routine. Seeing teammates report in makes it easier to keep going
  • Practice at a private table: invite clan members and repeat the same spot using the poker practice method
  • Compete on the leaderboard: when you spot a teammate's [tag] on the daily leaderboard, use the chat to compare how your sessions are going

Do not post personal details such as your real name or contact information in chat or Discord. Clan tags, names, and descriptions are checked for blocked words.

Leaving, kicks, and dissolving

A member can leave any time with Leave in the clan settings. After the confirmation, you are free to accept invitations or apply to other clans. When the master leaves, the clan is dissolved and every member is removed.

  • Leave: a member action that does not affect anyone else
  • Kick: the master removes a member. A kicked player cannot apply to that clan again for one week
  • Dissolve: the master action (Dissolve the clan in the settings) that deletes the clan and removes every membership

There is no way to transfer the master role. If you want a different master, create a new clan and invite everyone again.

FAQ

Who can create a clan on nlh.poker?

Any logged-in player who is not already in a clan can create one. You choose a tag (1–5 uppercase letters or digits), a name (up to 20 characters), and a description (up to 200 characters). Creating a clan does not cost chips or items.

Can I be in more than one clan?

No. Each player can belong to one clan at a time. To switch, leave your current clan first, then join another by invite or request.

Can I change my clan tag later?

No. The tag cannot be changed after the clan is created. The master can still edit the name, description, and Discord invite link, so choose the tag carefully.

How many players can a clan have?

A clan holds up to 50 players, including the master. A full clan cannot receive join requests, and the master cannot invite more players until a spot opens up.

What happens if my join request is rejected?

If the master rejects your request, or kicks you later, you cannot apply to that same clan again for one week. You can still apply to other clans or accept an invitation.

What happens when the clan master leaves?

When the master leaves, the clan is dissolved and every member is removed. There is no way to hand the master role to someone else, so create a new clan if you want to hand things over.

How do I turn off clan chat notifications?

Open Settings, find the notifications section, and turn off the Clan chat switch. This switch is only available when push notifications are enabled.

How long does clan chat history last?

Messages older than 3 months are deleted. When you open the chat, you see the latest 50 messages that are still kept.
